Optional Judging Criteria
Title Judging Criteria
Scoring:
Scoring will be conducted on a 10-point scale:
9-10 = Excellent        7-8 = Very Good        5-6 = Good        3-4 = Average        
1-2 = Below Average

Areas of Competition:
This year, the Title competition will consist of 4 weighted categories: Interview
or Playtime, “All About Me” Book Patriotic Wear, and Evening Gown.  The
highest composite scores will determine the finalists.  Teen and up Finalists
will answer a question on stage that is worth 10 percent of their score.

Interview – Title Event  (State & National Level only)
Delegates must be able to express themselves clearly, diplomatically, and
must project a pleasant personality at all times.  Competition details:
  • Contestants will be brought into the judging room in groups. Each
    contestant will give a maximum 20 second introduction to include their
    name, age, and if they choose, additional information.
  • Interviews are conducted one on one.  Each contestant will have a total
    of two minutes with each judge prior to the competition. Delegate will
    approach their judge, briefly introduce herself and field questions by the
    judges.
  • The interview focuses primarily on delegates' personal information (e.
    g., hobbies, ambition, etc.) but may include opinion questions that
    require general knowledge of social and current events.
  • Contestants are asked to wear a dress, suit, or pantsuit for the
    interview.
  • Judging criteria:  conversational skill, personality, demeanor, grooming,
    and fashion sense.

Patriotic Wear Fashion – Title Event (All levels)
Delegates must be able to project their own personal sense of style. This
segment will be walked in standard “T” formation.  
  • Choice of attire is totally up to the delegate.
  • Age appropriate coverage.
  • Natural competition, very minimal beading, sequins allowed
  • Outfits are NOT custom made and are off the rack.  
  • Judging criteria:  modeling, personality, grooming and fun fashion
    sense.

“All About Me” Book – Title Event (State and National Level)
Delegates may use this to express themselves clearly and honestly to give the judges a feel of who they
are.

Evening Gown – Title Event (All Levels)
Delegates must carry themselves with dignity, grace, poise and elegance.  Judges will not be evaluating
the cost or designer label of the gown, but rather how well it suits the delegate (e.g., fit, color, style) as well
as delegate's on-stage presentation. Competition details:
  • Evening gown must be floor length Jr. Teen division and above.  Short or long gowns are acceptable
    for Toddler and Youth divisions.
  • Jr. Teen and above are permitted to wear sophisticated, beaded gowns.  
  • Judging criteria:  modeling, personality, beauty, grooming and fashion sense.

Teen and up divisions only:  - Title Event  (State and National Level)
On-Stage Question
Delegates must be able to express themselves with confidence.  Delegates will respond to a final
question on-stage. Delegates in divisions of Teen and up will be given a question bank (20 questions
maximum) prior to the competition, but will draw any one of the given questions on-stage.  Competition
details:
  • Judging criteria: articulation, quality of response, beauty, personality
FASHION OPTIONALS

Casual and Western Wear Fashion - Optional (All Levels)
Delegates must be able to project their own personal sense of style. This segment will be very much like a
runway fashion show.
  • Attire is dressy-casual and may be a dress or pants outfit.
  • Attire is off-the-rack, non-glitz  
  • Props that enhance the outfit are allowed
  • Judging criteria:  modeling, personality, beauty, grooming, and fashion sense.

Patriotic Wear Fashion – Optional (State and Nationals Only)
Delegates must be able to project their own personal sense of style. This segment will be walked in
standard “T” formation, but with attitude. Contestants ARE allowed to show personality by their walk, strut,
march – but are not to “perform” a dance routine.  
  • Choice of attire is totally up to the delegate.
  • Age appropriate coverage.
  • Natural to Full glitz - Beaded and stoned apparel allowed.
  • May be custom made or off the rack.  
  • Judging criteria:  modeling, personality, grooming and fun fashion sense.

PERFORMANCE OPTIONALS

Talent - Optional (All Levels)
Delegates must demonstrate a talent with dignity.  Judges will be evaluating the amount of practice and
effort that goes into the talent, the completion of the talent, the age appropriateness, as well as delegate's
on-stage presentation. Competition details:
  • A talent is anything that is practiced. The talent shall be age appropriate (2-4 yrs, a nursery rhyme,
    dance routine, etc.)
  • Attire should match the type of talent performed.  
  • Talent must not exceed 3 minutes, but may be shorter.  Judging is not based on length, but points
    will be deducted if over the 3-minute time limit.
  • Judging criteria:  age appropriateness, personality, presentation, accuracy and difficulty.

Commercial Actress - Optionals (All Levels)
Contestant will perform a commercial
  • Commercial must not be more than 30 seconds in length.
  • Commercial can be created or one seen on TV
  • Created commercials must be something you can touch (not a feeling)
  • Commercial Props allowed (only what the commercial is about)
  • Informative commercials must convey a message, Sales commercials must entice you to purchase
    the item
  • Judging criteria: Articulation, personality, originality, presentation

Broadcasting - Optionals (State and Nationals Only)
Contestant will perform a broadcast that you would see on a television newscast
  • Segment is 60 seconds or less.
  • The broadcast must be news, weather, sports, or human interest. No opinion or editorial broadcasts.
  • No props allowed other than poster board
  • Judging criteria: Eye contact, Delivery, Articulation, Professionalism, Presentation

Cheer – Optionals (State and Nationals Only)
Contestant will perform a cheer
  • Cheer can be up to 90 seconds.  If bringing music, ensure it is cued; hand in 2 copies at registration.
  • No props other than pom poms. Bring own mats if needed.
  • Judging Criteria: Articulation, Personality, Presentation, Originality, Difficulty

Speech - Optionals (State and Nationals Only)
Contestant will perform a speech
  • Speech must be 100 words or less
  • Contestants are to hand in two typed copies; judges will be informed of any mistakes in the speech
    after speech completion
  • Speeches are to be on:
    (1) The most important person to you and why
    (2) Who you admire and why
    (3) Your state
    (4) Impact of today’s youth on tomorrows world
    (5) If you have a platform, you may speak on that
  • Judging criteria: Articulation, personality, originality, presentation, organization, appropriateness of
    content.


PHOTOGENIC OPTOINALS

Photogenic appeal – Optionals (Photogenic (All levels)) , (B/W and Composite (State and Nationals))
Photo requirements:
  • At least 5X7, no larger than 8X10
  • B/W Photogenic must have no color accents
  • Must be headshot to 3/4 length (head to thighs)
  • Delegate may be in either a seated or standing position.
  • Photos do not have to be professional but should be of good quality and clarity.
  • Judging criteria:  photogenic appeal, photo quality & clarity, beauty, personality, grooming and
    fashion sense.

Portfolio and Composite - Optionals (Portfolio (All Levels), Composite (State and Nationals)
Photo requirements:
  • Portfolio should show an array of photo styles, outfits, expressions.
  • Portfolios can have up to 15 pages but can have as few as 3.
  • Portfolios are to be judged on quality, not quantity.
  • Portfolios may have props, animals, etc. but delegate should be the only person
  • Composite entries should show a range of photographs on one sheet
  • Photos do not have to be professional but should be of good quality and clarity.
  • Judging criteria:  photogenic appeal, photo quality & clarity, beauty, personality, grooming and
    fashion sense.
